The fascists lost both chambers, socialists won from Michigan to Denver, and Missouri killed the Troost map and a new jail. Now the demands.

Defender Briefing (The Morning After Edition)

By Ryan A. Sorrell, Executive Editor Β· November 4th, 2026

πŸ’‘1,050 words ... a 4-minute read. Everything they hoped you’d miss.

Editor's Note: Good morning, family. They lost Kansas. They lost Texas. They lost the House, the Senate, and the racist jim crow map they drew down the middle of Troost Avenue. Cable news will call it a rebuke of Trump, and to a great extent it was. But it was also a class warfare vote, against the billionaires and the corruption, against neo-nazism, against two years of being told to wait. A new consciousness is emerging among the people of this country, and last night opened doors our communities have been organizing toward for decades. Read, then answer the poll, because what we demand next is yours to decide.

1. πŸŒ… A New Light Burns in America. Stunning Wave of Socialist and Progressive Victories Marks New Era in American Politics.

Janeese Lewis George is the first democratic socialist mayor of Washington, D.C.

Both chambers flipped. Democrats took the Senate by flipping seven Republican seats, some held since before most of us were born, and retook the House. Texas sent James Talarico, its first elected Democratic senator since 1988. Kansas sent Adam Hamilton, the first Democrat in nearly 100 years. Susan Collins is gone!

Indeed, last night was a class vote. The billionaire (and trillionaire) class, who have sold us out for war profits and genocides abroad, resulting in skyrocketing rent, groceries and insulin, paid the price for their decisions last night in an overwhelming and decisive blow to the capitalist class. The corporate networks will say β€œcost of living.” They may attempt to minimize the spectacular victories of the socialist and progressive left, but make no mistake, a tide has turned in this nation, and a new consciousness has awakened.

AIPAC lost in public. Abdul El-Sayed is the senator from Michigan and the first Muslim in the U.S. Senate, after the israel lobby spent more than $60 million to stop him in the primary.

The socialists hold the margin. Seven open democratic socialists now sit in the House, and two of them told Politico they will use their votes to extract concessions from leadership. Jeffries cannot pass a budget without them.

πŸ† A Quick View of the Wins, Coast to Coast.

  • Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist born in Ethiopia, won Denver and became the first Gen Z woman in Congress.
  • Darializa Avila Chevalier took out a five-term Democratic incumbent in Harlem, then won the general. Donavan McKinney won Detroit, Chris Rabb won Philly, Claire Valdez won Queens. AOC and Rashida Tlaib held.
  • Keisha Lance Bottoms is the first Black woman ever elected governor of a state, one of five Black governors elected in a single night.
  • Deb Haaland is the first Native woman elected governor, in New Mexico. Peggy Flanagan is the first Native woman in the Senate.
  • Allison Montgomery flipped a Republican seat to become Alabama's first trans legislator, after the right spent an estimated $183 million nationally on anti-trans attack ads. Georgia and Montana seated their first trans lawmakers the same night.
  • Gina Hinojosa is the first Latina governor of Texas. Annie Andrews is the first woman South Carolina has ever sent to the Senate. Amy Acton is Ohio's first woman governor.
  • Young people showed up. Black, brown, Indigenous, immigrant, Muslim, Jewish, every one of them tired of being poor in the richest country on earth.

The fact of the matter is this: Fascism loses when the thing replacing it is strong enough to make it unthinkable. Trump still holds the White House, the courts, and the camps for two more years. Last night the People took the purse. What happens with it is the fight that starts today.

2. πŸ—³οΈ MISSOURI BREAKDOWN: THE PEOPLE BEAT THE MAP, THE BAN AND THE JAIL

vf-1022-cori-bush-roe-the-vote-sitestory.jpg

The Troost jim crow gerrymander is dead. A year ago the governor sat Missouri's top Republicans in a room in Jefferson City, at the White House's request, and drew a congressional map that split Kansas City in three along the redline.

Organizers gathered 300,000 signatures while the Secretary of State tried to toss them. The Missouri Supreme Court forced the vote. Last night Missourians killed Prop A.

Material wins across the state.

  • Amendment 3 failed. Abortion stays legal in Missouri.
  • Amendment 6 passed. Legislators lose their easy path to overturning laws the People vote for.
  • Boone County voted down a new jail. Prop L, a sales tax for a 570-bed jail the sheriff said was urgent, lost roughly 60 to 40. The No New Jail coalition argued that a bigger jail means more Black, brown and poor people will be locked up in it. The county agreed.
  • Cleaver won with over 70 percent on the old lines. Fred Wellman flipped Ann Wagner's seat in St. Louis County.
  • Jackson County passed the COMBAT anti-crime tax. We will be watching every dollar.

3. 🌊 THE MANDATE IS OURS. THE PEOPLE MUST MAKE BOLD, RADICAL, GENERATIONAL DEMANDS.

The excuse era is over. For two years Democrats told us their hands were tied. The Chuck Schumers, the Hakeem Jeffries, and yes, even politicians from our own region, looked us in the eye and said they could do nothing to stop a genocide, nothing to stop the explosion of prices at home, nothing to stop the war on the working class. The fact they were a minority was their excuse, but last night the People took that excuse away.

Now, they hold both chambers, the purse and the subpoena, and we will never again accept an excuse from people with real power.

Here is the list we have been building so far of the types of demands The People must begin to make.

  • Medicare for All. Single-payer, no premiums, deductibles, or networks.

  • Reparations. Direct payments to Black Americans, land, and a federal reparations program, this session.

  • A federal rent cap and a national tenants’ bill of rights. Cap increases, ban no-cause evictions, and fund public and social housing on the scale of the New Deal.

  • Cancel the debt. Student debt, medical debt, and the predatory debt sold door to door on the East Side. Wipe it and let people breathe.

  • Cut the arms. Every dollar to israel to buy bombs that kill children is not only horrifying, but spends dollars that could be invested right here on Troost, on Prospect, to build our schools, neighborhoods, grocery stores. Not one more shipment.
  • End the war budget. Cut the Pentagon by half and close the overseas bases. Put the money in schools, water, transit and the neighborhoods the empire has starved.
  • Defund the kidnappers. ICE's budget is written in the House. Zero it. Close the CoreCivic concentration camp in Leavenworth Kansas.
  • Tax the billionaires who bought the last Congress. A wealth tax on fortunes over $50 million and a 90 percent top rate on income above $10 million.
  • Investigate and prosecute the fascists. Every agent who assaulted a citizen, every official who built a camp, every contractor who profited. Oversight means subpoenas and referrals.
  • End qualified immunity and the police grant pipeline. Zero out the federal dollars that buy the surveillance, the tanks and the facial recognition cameras in Kansas City, and send that money to REACH-style crisis response and the programs that prove a city can live without militarized police.
  • Decarcerate. Repeal mandatory minimums, end federal cash bail, end the private prison contracts that built Leavenworth, and bring the people home.
  • Hands off the ballot. Restore the Voting Rights Act in full, ban partisan gerrymanders like the Troost map nationwide, and make Election Day a federal holiday.

  • Trans people have the same rights as everyone. Federal protection for gender-affirming care and an end to every federal dollar that funds discrimination against trans kids.

  • Pack the court. Expand the Supreme Court, impose term limits, and strip the six-justice majority of its power to veto what the People vote for.
